Diwali and Street Dogs: 11 Simple Ways to Keep Them Safe

Diwali is a festival of light and joy. For a dog, the loud crackers can be the most frightening nights of the year. A few small things from you make a big difference.

Why crackers are so hard on dogs

Dogs hear far better than we do, so a cracker that is loud to us is painful to them. Scared dogs run blindly. Many get hurt in traffic, get lost, or hide under cars. Some are burned by crackers lit close to them.

For street dogs near you

  • Burst crackers away from where dogs rest: not near parked cars, building corners or under stairs.
  • Choose fewer and quieter crackers, or skip them altogether.
  • Leave a safe corner open, like a parking area or a covered spot, where dogs can hide.
  • Keep a bowl of water outside. Frightened dogs pant a lot and get thirsty.
  • Tell children kindly never to throw crackers at animals or tie them to tails. It is cruel, and harming animals is an offence under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.

For your own dog at home

  • Walk your dog in the daytime, before the crackers start. Avoid places where people are bursting them.
  • Keep a quiet room ready, with windows and curtains closed and the TV or music on low.
  • Make sure your dog wears a collar with your phone number, in case it runs off.
  • Never give human medicine. If your dog gets very anxious, ask your vet before Diwali. Calming medicine should only be given on a vet’s advice.

The morning after

  • Check under your car before you drive. Scared dogs and puppies often hide there.
  • Sweep up leftover crackers. Dogs sometimes chew them, which can make them very sick.
